The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®), administered by College Board, allows students to earn college credit by demonstrating mastery of introductory college-level subjects.
The CLEP Spanish Language exam evaluates listening and reading comprehension skills equivalent to one to two years of college Spanish study, combining Level 1 and Level 2 content into a single exam.
By taking and passing the CLEP Spanish Language exam, you may be able to:

Eligibility
There are no eligibility requirements for taking the CLEP Spanish Language exam. It is open to anyone who wants to demonstrate Spanish proficiency.

Some questions are pretest items and do not count toward your score. The exam includes three separately timed sections, with each question weighted equally.
CLEP® Spanish Language Exam Outline
The CLEP Spanish Language Levels 1 and 2 exam measures your ability to understand spoken and written Spanish across three major sections.
I. Listening: Rejoinders (15%)
This section assesses listening comprehension through short spoken exchanges.
You will listen to brief audio clips and choose the response that best completes or continues the exchange.
Skills tested include:
- Understanding common expressions
- Responding appropriately in everyday conversations
- Recognizing tone and intent
II. Listening: Dialogues and Narratives (25%)
This section evaluates comprehension of longer spoken passages, such as conversations and narrations.
You may be asked to:
- Answer questions based on audio selections
- Interpret meaning with the support of images
- Identify main ideas and details
The two listening sections together are approximately 30 minutes long. Audio is played only once, and timing begins after directions are dismissed.
III. Reading (60%)
The Reading section is 60 minutes and consists of three parts:
Part A: Discrete Sentences (16%)
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Sentence structure
Part B: Cloze Passages (20%)
- Vocabulary in context
- Grammatical accuracy within short passages
Part C: Reading Passages & Authentic Materials (24%)
- Reading comprehension
- Interpretation of written texts
- Understanding real-world Spanish materials
Credit Recommendations
According to the American Council on Education (ACE):
- A score of 50 is commonly recommended for 6 college credits
- A score of 63 is commonly recommended for 9 college credits
Each college sets its own CLEP credit policy, so always verify:

- Number of credits awarded
- Courses that may be bypassed

To register:

- Choose in-person or remote testing

Your College Board account allows you to:
- View exam history

Scoring Information
- One point is awarded for each correct answer
- No penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions
- Raw scores are converted to a scaled score ranging from approximately 20 to 80
You will receive:
- An unofficial score immediately after the exam
- An official score report available the next day in your CLEP account

There is no universal passing score. Most colleges follow ACE recommendations, but requirements vary by institution.
