CLEP® Spanish Language Exam Outline

The CLEP Spanish Language Levels 1 and 2 exam measures your ability to understand spoken and written Spanish across three major sections.

I. Listening: Rejoinders (15%)

This section assesses listening comprehension through short spoken exchanges.
You will listen to brief audio clips and choose the response that best completes or continues the exchange.

Skills tested include:

  • Understanding common expressions
  • Responding appropriately in everyday conversations
  • Recognizing tone and intent

II. Listening: Dialogues and Narratives (25%)

This section evaluates comprehension of longer spoken passages, such as conversations and narrations.

You may be asked to:

  • Answer questions based on audio selections
  • Interpret meaning with the support of images
  • Identify main ideas and details

The two listening sections together are approximately 30 minutes long. Audio is played only once, and timing begins after directions are dismissed.

III. Reading (60%)

The Reading section is 60 minutes and consists of three parts:

Part A: Discrete Sentences (16%)

  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Sentence structure

Part B: Cloze Passages (20%)

  • Vocabulary in context
  • Grammatical accuracy within short passages

Part C: Reading Passages & Authentic Materials (24%)

  • Reading comprehension
  • Interpretation of written texts
  • Understanding real-world Spanish materials
