By taking and passing the CLEP Humanities exam, you may be able to skip a college humanities course. This can potentially:

The CLEP Humanities test is available for anyone to take at any time. There are:

CLEP Humanities Exam Outline
The CLEP Humanities exam contains 140 multiple-choice questions and is divided into two major sections, each representing 50% of the exam.
Every question assesses one or more of the following:
- Knowledge of factual information
- Recognition of literary techniques and artistic characteristics
- Interpretation of art reproductions and literary passages
I. Literature (50%)
The questions in this section cover four main areas:
Fiction (15%–20%)
Analysis of themes, narrative techniques, and major literary works.
Nonfiction (10%)
Essays, historical documents, and literary prose.
Drama (10%)
Understanding dramatic structure, playwrights, and theatrical traditions.
Poetry (10%–15%)
Interpretation of poetic devices, structure, and historical context.
II. The Arts (50%)
The questions in this section cover four major areas:
Performing Arts: Film, Dance, etc. (10%)
History, techniques, and artistic interpretation.
Performing Arts: Music (15%)
Musical styles, composers, and historical periods.
Visual Arts: Architecture (5%)
Architectural styles and historical developments.
Visual Arts: Painting, Sculpture, etc. (20%)
Art movements, artists, and visual analysis.
Registration Information
You can register online through the College Board website. The CLEP Humanities exam is offered year-round with flexible scheduling.
To register:
- Create or log into your “My CLEP Account.”
- Manage your profile and select your exam.
- Choose remote testing or a testing center.
- Pay the $97 exam fee.
- Print your examination ticket (if testing in-person).
From your CLEP account, you can also:
- View past test scores
- Manage your profile
- Request transcripts
Testing Remotely
Before registering for remote testing, ensure you meet the technical requirements:
- PC desktop or laptop only (Macs, Chromebooks, and tablets not supported)
- Windows 10 operating system (Windows 11 not supported)
- Latest version of Google Chrome
- Speaker (headphones not allowed)
- Camera and microphone
- Reliable internet connection
After selecting your test date and time:
- Download the ETS Online Test application
- On test day, log in 30 minutes early
- Download and install the Proctortrack desktop application
- Complete identity verification and room scan
- Launch the ETS Online Test application to begin
During the exam, no one may enter your testing room. If someone does, you must ask them to leave without further conversation.
Test Day Information (In-Person Testing)
Arrive at the testing center 15–30 minutes early with:
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Printed registration ticket
You must store all personal belongings in a locker, including:
- Cell phones
- Notes and books
- Bags
- Food
- Calculators
A TI-30XS MultiView scientific calculator will be available within the testing software if needed.
How the Exam Is Scored
The CLEP Humanities exam scoring process includes:
- 1 point awarded for each correct answer
- No penalty for incorrect answers
- No penalty for skipped questions
Your total correct answers make up your raw score.
The raw score is converted to a scaled score ranging from approximately 20 to 80.
- Your unofficial score appears immediately after finishing the exam.
- Your official score report becomes available the next day in your CLEP account.
There is no universal passing score. Each college sets its own CLEP credit policy.
