The CLEP College Composition exam tests your writing skills and general English knowledge and allows you to demonstrate college-level proficiency without taking a semester-long course.

The CLEP College Composition exam contains:
I. Conventions of Standard Written English (10%)

Essays
You will be required to write two essays:
Essay 1: You will be given a statement and asked to write about the extent to which you agree or disagree. This essay should be supported by your personal experiences and observations.
Essay 2: You will be given two sources on the same topic and asked to synthesize them into a cohesive essay. You must cite both sources whenever using direct quotes or paraphrased material.

Registration
The CLEP College Composition exam is administered year-round on a flexible schedule. Registration is completed through the College Board website.
To register:
- Create a College Board account.
- Select the CLEP College Composition exam.
- Choose testing format (in-person or remote).
- Select your date and time.
- Pay the $97 exam fee.
Your College Board account also allows you to:
- View exam history
- Access scores
- Request transcripts
Testing Options
Testing In-Person
After selecting your testing center, date, and time:
- Print your exam ticket (screenshots are not accepted).
- Arrive 15–30 minutes early on test day.
- Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID.
- Store personal belongings in provided lockers.
Testing Remotely
Before registering, ensure you meet these system requirements:
- PC desktop or laptop (Macs, Chromebooks, and tablets are not supported)
- Windows 10 operating system (Windows 11 not supported)
- Latest version of Google Chrome
- Speaker (internal or external; headphones not allowed)
- Camera and microphone
- Reliable internet connection
You must download the ETS Online Test desktop application to complete the exam at home.
Test Day
In-Person Testing
On exam day:
- Arrive 15–30 minutes early.
- Present your photo ID and printed ticket.
- Leave all personal items outside the testing room.
Remote Testing
- Log in to your CLEP account 15–30 minutes before your scheduled time.
- Download and install the Proctortrack application.
- Complete identity verification (face scan and ID scan).
- Scan your testing room using your webcam.
- Open the ETS Online Test app to begin the exam.
During the exam, no one may enter your testing area. If someone does, you must immediately ask them to leave without additional conversation.
Scoring Information
CLEP exams are scored based on the number of correct answers:
- One point is awarded for each correct answer.
- No points are deducted for incorrect or skipped questions.
- The total number of correct answers is your raw score.
- Raw scores are converted to a scaled score ranging from approximately 20 to 80.
You will receive:
- An unofficial score immediately after finishing the exam.
- An official score report available the following day in your CLEP account.
Passing Score
There is no universal passing score for the CLEP College Composition exam. Each college sets its own score requirements.
According to the American Council on Education, a scaled score of 50 or higher is commonly recommended.
Be sure to check your institution’s official CLEP credit policy.
