The CLEP Financial Accounting exam measures your understanding of accounting concepts, terminology, calculations, and the preparation and analysis of financial statements.

I. General Topics (20%–30%)

This section assesses your knowledge of:

  • Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Double-entry accounting and the accounting equation
  • Transaction analysis
  • The accounting cycle
  • Business ethics
  • Purpose, presentation, and relationships among financial statements
  • Forms of business ownership

II. The Income Statement (20%–30%)

This section assesses your understanding of:

  • Income statement presentation formats
  • Revenue and expense recognition
  • Cost of goods sold
  • Irregular items (e.g., discontinued operations)
  • Profitability analysis

III. The Balance Sheet (30%–40%)

This section assesses your knowledge of:

  • Cash and internal controls
  • Accounts and notes receivable (including bad debts)
  • Inventory valuation
  • Long-term asset acquisition and disposal
  • Depreciation, amortization, and depletion
  • Intangible assets (e.g., patents, goodwill)
  • Accounts and notes payable
  • Long-term liabilities (e.g., bonds payable)
  • Owner’s equity, preferred stock, and common stock
  • Retained earnings
  • Liquidity, solvency, and activity analysis

IV. Statement of Cash Flows (5%–10%)

This section assesses your ability to understand and analyze:

Registration

The CLEP Financial Accounting exam is offered year-round. Registration is completed through the College Board website.

To register:

  1. Create a College Board account
  2. Select the CLEP Financial Accounting exam
  3. Choose your testing format (in-person or remote)
  4. Select your test date and time
  5. Pay the $97 exam fee

Your College Board account allows you to view scores, manage exam history, and request transcripts.

Testing Remotely

Before testing remotely, ensure you meet system requirements, including:

  • PC or laptop (Macs, Chromebooks, and tablets not supported)
  • Windows 10 operating system
  • The latest version of Google Chrome
  • Camera, microphone, and speakers
  • Stable internet connection

You will need to download the ETS Online Test application to test from home.

Testing In-Person

  • Print your exam ticket (screenshots not accepted)
  • Arrive 15–30 minutes early
  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID
  • Store personal items in the provided lockers

Scoring Information

CLEP Financial Accounting scores are based on the number of correct answers:

  • One point for each correct answer
  • No penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions

Your raw score is converted to a scaled score ranging approximately from 20 to 80.

You will receive:

  • An unofficial score immediately after completing the exam
  • An official score report will be available the following day in your CLEP account

Passing Score

There is no universal passing score. Each institution sets its own credit policy.

The American Council on Education commonly recommends a scaled score of 50 for college credit.

Always verify score requirements with your institution.
