What is the CLEP® History of the United States I Exam?

The College Board administers the College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®), which offers affordable exams that allow students to earn college credit for knowledge they already have.

The CLEP History of the United States I exam covers U.S. history from early European colonization through 1877.

If you have gained knowledge through:

  • Previous coursework
  • Independent study
  • Homeschooling
  • Professional or life experience
  • On-the-job training

You can take this exam and potentially earn credit equivalent to a one-semester college course.

By passing the CLEP History of the United States I (and II) exams, you may be able to skip introductory U.S. History courses, which can:

  • Earn you three or more college credits
  • Save you money compared to a full semester course
  • Help you graduate on time — or even early
  • Add flexibility to your degree program

Always check with your college or university to confirm that they accept CLEP scores.

I hadn’t studied early U.S. history since high school, so I was nervous about everything from colonization to Reconstruction. Prepsaret’s practice test showed me exactly where I needed review. I passed with a 59 and earned my credits!

Hannah C.

The breakdown of 1500–1789 and 1790–1877 helped me organize my study plan. The sections on federalism and constitutional development were especially clear. I felt fully prepared walking into the exam.

Matthew R.

I loved how the practice test included detailed answer explanations. It didn’t just tell me the correct answer — it explained the historical context behind it. That deeper understanding made a huge difference on test day.
