CLEP® Calculus Exam Test Format and Structure
The CLEP® Calculus examination covers skills and concepts typically taught in a one-semester college calculus course. Approximately 60% of the exam focuses on limits and differential calculus, while 40% covers integral calculus.
The exam emphasizes an intuitive understanding of calculus and practical experience with its methods and applications. It assumes prior knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry.

Graphing Calculator Information
A graphing calculator is integrated into the exam software and is available during Section 2. Students are expected to know how and when to use the calculator appropriately.
The calculator, along with a brief tutorial, is available as a free 90-day trial download. Students are encouraged to become familiar with its functionality before test day.
You may need to use the calculator to:
- Perform calculations (exponents, roots, trigonometric values, logarithms)
- Graph functions and analyze graphs
- Find zeros of functions
- Determine points of intersection

Test Measurement Overview
Format
The CLEP® Calculus exam is computer-based and non-adaptive. Multiple test forms exist, each containing a predetermined set of scored questions.
- Some questions may be pretest items and do not count toward your score.
- There may be overlap between different test forms for statistical reasons.

CLEP examinations are scored without a penalty for incorrect answers.

Recommended Credit-Granting Score
A scaled score of 50 typically represents the recommended credit-granting score, equivalent to a grade of C in a corresponding college course.
- Recommended B-level scores reflect stronger performance.

Raw-to-scale score conversions may vary slightly depending on the difficulty of the specific test form administered.
