This page covers everything you need to know about the CLEP College Mathematics exam, which assesses topics typically taught in college mathematics courses for non-math majors.
What is the CLEP College Mathematics Exam?
CLEP exams allow you to earn college credit for knowledge you already have. If you have learned the material through prior coursework, on-the-job training, independent study, or life experience, you can take a single exam and receive credit as if you completed a one-semester college course.
By taking and passing the CLEP College Mathematics exam, you may be able to skip a required college math course. This can:
- Allow you to earn three or more college credits
- Save you money since the exam costs less than a college semester
- Help you graduate on time or even early
- Add flexibility to your degree plan
- Eliminate hours of class attendance and homework
Before registering, be sure to confirm that your college accepts CLEP exam credits.
CLEP College Mathematics Exam Eligibility
Anyone can take a CLEP exam at any time. There are:
- No age restrictions
- No educational requirements
Individuals who commonly take this exam include:

How the CLEP College Mathematics Exam is Scored
The CLEP College Mathematics exam uses a point-based scoring system:
- Each correct answer adds one point
- No points are deducted for incorrect answers
- No penalty for skipped questions
Your total number of correct answers becomes your raw score. The raw score is then converted into a scaled score ranging from approximately 20 to 80.
Your unofficial score appears immediately after you complete the exam. Your official score report becomes available the following day in your CLEP account.
Passing Score
There is no universal passing score.
Each college sets its own minimum score requirement. You can typically find this information on your college’s website.
According to the American Council on Education (ACE), many colleges award credit for a scaled score of 50 or higher.
