CLEP Principles of Marketing Exam Test Format

The exam evaluates your understanding of:
- The role of marketing in society and within a firm
- Consumer and organizational markets
- Marketing strategy planning
- The marketing mix
- Marketing institutions
- International marketing
- Ethics
- Marketing research
- Services and nonprofit marketing
- Economic/demographic, social/cultural, political/legal, and technological trends affecting marketing
Basic Test Information
- Exam Name: CLEP® Principles of Marketing
- Number of Questions: Approximately 100 questions
- Time Limit: 90 minutes
- Test Format: Computer-based
- Question Types: Multiple-choice
- Pretest Questions: Some questions are unscored and used for future test development
- Adaptive Format: The exam is not adaptive

Test Measurement Overview
Each computer-based form of the CLEP® Principles of Marketing exam contains a predetermined set of scored questions. While there may be overlap between test forms, each form may contain a few, many, or no questions in common. Overlap may be necessary for statistical purposes.
Not all questions presented contribute to your final score. Some are pretested for future use and will not count toward scoring.
Scoring Information
CLEP® examinations are scored without penalty for incorrect answers, meaning there is no deduction for guessing.
- Raw Score: Total number of correct answers
- Scaled Score Range: 20–80
- Raw scores are converted to scaled scores to adjust for differences in difficulty across test forms
- A scaled score of 50 corresponds to the recommended credit-granting score for C-level performance
- A scaled score of 80 represents high but typically less-than-perfect raw performance
Recommended Credit-Granting Score
The recommended credit-granting score represents the performance of students earning a grade of C in the equivalent college course. A recommended B-level score reflects stronger performance.
These standards were established through a Standard Setting Study (most recently conducted in 2007). A panel of experts teaching equivalent college-level marketing courses evaluated each test question to determine raw scores corresponding to B and C performance levels.
Panel members included faculty from institutions such as:
- University of Texas at Arlington
- Saint Xavier University
- Essex County College
- Middle Tennessee State University
- Carroll College
- University of Tampa
- University of Maine at Augusta
- New York University — Stern School of Business
- New Mexico State University
- Pamlico Community College
- Northeastern University
- Washington State University
- Pikes Peak Community College
- Bucks County Community College
- Winona State University
- Jamestown Community College
After determining recommended scores, statistical scaling establishes the precise relationship between raw and scaled scores.

Validity and Reliability
Validity
Validity refers to how accurately the test measures a candidate’s knowledge of marketing.
Two primary types of validity evidence support the CLEP® Principles of Marketing exam:
- Content-related validity: Experts ensure the exam reflects content typically taught in college-level marketing courses. Faculty are encouraged to review outlines and sample questions to confirm alignment with their institution’s curriculum.
- Criterion-related validity: Statistical studies compare CLEP® scores with student performance in equivalent college courses. The College Board conducts these studies through the Admitted Class Evaluation Service (ACES).
Reliability
Reliability reflects the consistency and stability of test scores.
- Reliability Coefficient: Ranges from .00 to 1.00
- .00 = No stability
- 1.00 = Perfect stability
- Standard Error of Measurement (SEM): Estimates how much a test-taker’s score may vary across different test forms
- Conditional Standard Error of Measurement (CSEM): Indicates expected score variation around the recommended C-level credit-granting score
Higher reliability corresponds to lower measurement error.
