The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®), administered by College Board, allows students to demonstrate college-level knowledge and earn academic credit without completing a full semester course. 

The CLEP French Language exam measures your ability to understand spoken and written French, covering material typically taught across two to four semesters of college-level French.

CLEP® French Language Exam Outline

The CLEP French Language exam evaluates listening and reading comprehension across three major sections:

I. Listening: Rejoinders (15%)

II. Listening: Dialogues and Narratives (25%)

Registration

The CLEP French Language exam is administered year-round through the College Board.

To register:

  1. Create a College Board account
  2. Select the CLEP French Language exam
  3. Choose in-person or remote testing
  4. Select your test date and location
  5. Pay the $97 exam fee

Your College Board account allows you to:

Testing In-Person

On test day:

  • An official score report available the next day in your CLEP account

Credit Recommendations

The American Council on Education recommends:

  • 6 college credits for a score of 50
  • 12 college credits for a score of 59
