What is the CLEP® American Government Exam?
If you are already knowledgeable about the American government without formally completing a college course, the CLEP exam allows you to earn college credit by passing a single exam.
Whether you gained your knowledge through high school coursework, independent study, professional experience, life experience, or previous college classes, you can take this exam and receive credit equivalent to a one-semester college course.

Registration Information
The CLEP American Government exam is administered year-round with flexible scheduling.
To register:
- Create a College Board account.
- Register for the exam.
- Pay the $97 exam fee.
- Choose your testing option (in-person or remote).
- Select your preferred date and time.
Your College Board account also allows you to view scores and request transcripts.
Testing In-Person
- Print your exam ticket (screenshots are not accepted).
- Arrive 30 minutes early.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
- Leave all personal items in a locker.
You cannot bring your own calculator. If a calculator is required, a TI-30XS MultiView scientific calculator will be provided within the testing software.
Testing Remotely
Before registering, ensure you meet system requirements:
- PC desktop or laptop only (Macs, Chromebooks, tablets not supported)
- Windows 10 operating system (Windows 11 not supported)
- Latest version of Google Chrome
- Speaker (no headphones allowed)
- Camera and microphone
- Reliable internet connection
On test day:
- Log in 30 minutes early
- Download and install Proctortrack
- Verify identity with webcam and photo ID
- Scan testing area
- Open ETS Online Test application to begin
No one may enter your testing space during the exam.
How the CLEP® Exam is Scored
- 1 point for each correct answer
- No penalty for incorrect or skipped answers
- Total correct answers = raw score
- Raw score converted to scaled score (typically 20–80 range)
You will receive:
- Unofficial score: Immediately after finishing
- Official score: Available the next day in your CLEP account
Passing Score
There is no universal passing score.
Each college determines its own required score. However, according to the American Council on Education, many colleges accept a scaled score of 50 or higher.
Always verify score requirements with your college before taking the exam.
