CLEP® College Precalculus Practice Test

Prepare for your CLEP® College Precalculus exam with our comprehensive practice test questions, study resources, and expert prep tools designed to help you earn college credit faster. At Prepsaret, we provide free practice tests, study guides, and flashcards to help you master key precalculus concepts and pass with confidence.

The College Board administers the College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®), which allows students to earn college credit for knowledge they already have. The CLEP Precalculus exam assesses mastery of skills and concepts required for success in a first-semester calculus course, with a strong focus on functions and their properties.

What is the CLEP® College Precalculus Exam?

The CLEP College Precalculus exam allows you to earn college credit without completing a full semester course. If you’ve studied precalculus in high school, through independent learning, or in a prior college course, you can demonstrate your knowledge by passing this exam.

The exam places significant emphasis on understanding and analyzing functions, including:

  • Linear
  • Quadratic
  • Absolute value
  • Square root
  • Polynomial
  • Rational
  • Exponential
  • Logarithmic
  • Trigonometric
  • Inverse trigonometric
  • Piecewise-defined functions

These functions may be presented symbolically, graphically, verbally, or in tabular form. A strong foundation in these areas is essential for calculus and other advanced college-level mathematics courses.

By passing the CLEP College Precalculus exam, you may:

  • Earn three or more college credits
  • Save tuition money
  • Accelerate graduation
  • Fulfill prerequisite requirements for calculus
  • Avoid repeating material you already know

CLEP® Precalculus

Before registering, confirm with your college that CLEP Precalculus credit is accepted.

CLEP® College Precalculus Exam Test Format

The CLEP College Precalculus exam contains approximately 48 questions divided into two sections and must be completed in about 90 minutes.

Basic Test Information:

  • Number of Questions: Approximately 48
  • Time Limit: 90 minutes
  • Test Format: Computer-delivered
  • Question Types: Mostly multiple-choice, with some numerical-entry questions

Section Breakdown

Section 1:

  • 25 questions
  • Approximately 50 minutes
  • Online graphing calculator (non-CAS) allowed
  • Only some questions require calculator use

Section 2:

  • 23 questions
  • Approximately 40 minutes
  • No calculator allowed

Graphing Calculator

An integrated online graphing calculator is available only during Section 1 of the exam. Students are expected to understand how and when to use it effectively.

In Section 1, you may be required to use the calculator to:

  • Perform calculations (exponents, roots, trigonometric values, logarithms)
  • Graph functions and analyze graphs
  • Find zeros of functions
  • Determine points of intersection
  • Identify minima and maxima
  • Solve equations numerically
  • Generate tables of values

Because calculator access is limited to Section 1, strong algebraic skills without a calculator are essential for success in Section 2.

Eligibility

CLEP exams are open to anyone. There are no age restrictions or formal educational requirements.

Individuals who commonly take the CLEP College Precalculus exam include:

  • College students
  • High school students seeking advanced placement
  • Homeschool students
  • Adults returning to college
  • Military service members
  • Professionals preparing for STEM-related programs

The timed quizzes really helped me prepare for the 90-minute format. Section 2 without a calculator worried me at first, but the non-calculator practice built my confidence and speed.
