Test Format Details
The Praxis 8000 Series Combined Test is designed to assess comprehensive entry-level elementary teacher competency across all major subject areas. This new test series reflects current educational standards from leading organizations including the International Literacy Association (ILA), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
The test uses a computer-based delivery system with selected-response questions in multiple formats (traditional multiple-choice, true/false, matching, and questions with multiple correct answers), numeric-entry questions (particularly in Mathematics and Science), and questions that may appear in various formats. Each subject area has its own specified time limit, and you manage your own pacing within the total testing session.
All questions are graded for content knowledge and instructional application. The passing score and score conversion methods vary by state, as individual states set their own passing score requirements for teacher licensure.
Time Allocation Recommendations (for combined test in one session):
- Reading and Language Arts (8002): 80 minutes (80 questions)
- Mathematics (8003): 100 minutes (68 questions)
- Social Studies (8004): 120 minutes (77 questions)
- Science (8005): 120 minutes (74 questions)
- Total: 8 hours continuous (with optional restroom breaks)
Alternative: Praxis Steps Modular Testing Beginning Summer 2026, Praxis Steps modular testing allows you to take each subject separately and retake only the specific step(s) you don't pass, rather than the entire combined exam.
Scoring Information
Each individual subject area within the Praxis 8000 series has its own scaled scoring system and passing score requirement set by the Arizona State Board of Education and individual states. Most states set a scaled score of 240 or higher as the minimum passing score for each subject area.
Your raw score (number of questions answered correctly) on each subject is converted to a scaled score ranging from 100 to 300, with conversion accounting for the difficulty of questions in your particular test form. The passing score of 240 reflects the level of knowledge and skills required for entry-level educators.
If you do not pass all four subject areas, you have the flexibility to retake only the area(s) you didn't pass, rather than the entire exam. A mandatory 30-day waiting period applies between retake attempts. Score reports are released periodically and include detailed diagnostic information about your performance on each subarea and test objective.

The new Praxis Elementary Education Fundamentals tests launch Spring 2026. Praxis Steps modular testing capabilities will be available Summer 2026.
You can take all four subjects together in the combined test session (8 hours total), or wait until Summer 2026 to use Praxis Steps and take each subject individually at your own pace.
The Praxis 8000 Combined Test contains 367 total selected-response questions distributed across the four subjects: Reading and Language Arts (80 questions), Mathematics (68 questions), Social Studies (77 questions), and Science (74 questions).
The total time for the combined test is 8 hours, divided into four separately timed sections: Reading and Language Arts (80 minutes), Mathematics (100 minutes), Social Studies (120 minutes), and Science (120 minutes).

Praxis Steps is a modular testing capability available Summer 2026 that allows candidates to take or retake discrete content sections at their own pace. Instead of taking or retaking the entire combined test, you can focus on individual subject areas and only retake the specific step(s) you don't pass, providing greater flexibility and reducing testing burden.
The Praxis 8000 series features updated content reflecting the latest educational standards from NCSS, NGSS, ILA, NSTA, and CAEP. It includes enhanced emphasis on the Science of Reading, modular testing flexibility through Praxis Steps, and reflects contemporary best practices in teaching and learning. The Praxis 8000 tests align with the latest standards from the International Literacy Association (ILA), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
Most candidates benefit from 8-10 weeks of consistent preparation, dedicating 10-15 hours per week across all four subject areas. We recommend: (1) taking diagnostic practice tests in each area to identify weak spots, (2) studying each subject systematically using our study guides and flashcards, (3) taking full-length combined practice tests to build stamina and time management, and (4) focusing intensive review on areas where you scored lowest.
Difficulty varies by individual background. Many test-takers find Mathematics and Science calculation-heavy content challenging, while others struggle with the breadth of Reading and Social Studies content. Our diagnostic practice tests will help you identify your specific areas for improvement.
Prepsaret provides comprehensive free practice tests covering all four subject areas, detailed study guides for each area, interactive flashcards organized by subject, online courses with video lessons, calculator tutorials, and expert guidance aligned with the official Praxis 8000 standards.
