The Praxis PLT Grades K–6 Exam is intended to evaluate a prospective teacher’s understanding of the core educational principles essential for entering the profession. 
It is aligned with the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) Model Core Teaching Standards and measures foundational knowledge expected of beginning educators.

Praxis PLT Grades K–6 Exam Test Format and Structure

The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam contains 70 selected-response questions and four constructed-response questions, and you will be given a time limit of 2 hours.
This exam focuses on student development, instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment, and professional responsibilities, making it a crucial step toward teacher certification.

Scoring Information

The Praxis PLT Grades K–6 exam uses a scaled scoring system. Most states require a minimum passing score of 157, though passing score requirements vary by state.

  • Unofficial scores for selected-response questions are often available immediately after testing
  • Official score reports (including constructed responses) are typically available within  five weeks

The exam fee is $130. To register, create an account on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website and choose your preferred test date, location, and testing format (remote or in-person).

I. Students as Learners (21 Questions)

This category evaluates your understanding of student development and learning processes, including:

This category contains all of the constructed-response questions and contains no selected-response questions. For each question, you will be asked to write an organized analysis of a given instructional scenario. Each scenario will align with one of the previous four test categories.

Praxis PLT Grades K–6 Exam Registration 

To register for the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam, you will need to create an online account with ETS. Through this account, you can apply to take the exam.

During registration, you will be asked to select the test-taking format (remote or at a testing center), test location (if you are taking the test at a testing center), and test date. You will also need to pay the $156 exam fee.
