The Praxis Teaching Reading: K–12 (5206) exam assesses prospective educators’ understanding of how students develop reading and writing skills from the elementary through secondary levels. 

Many teacher preparation programs include this exam as part of their admissions requirements, and it is required for reading licensure in 46 states as well as the District of Columbia.

Praxis Teaching Reading: K–12 (5206) Exam Test Format and Structure

The exam consists of 93 questions and must be completed within 150 minutes (2.5 hours). The assessment comprises two question types: selected-response questions (90 in total) and constructed-response questions (3 in total).

Selected-response questions may appear in several formats, including single-answer multiple choice, selecting multiple correct options, numeric entry, interpreting graphs, responding to reading passages, drag-and-drop interactions, and choosing the correct response from a drop-down menu.

Constructed-response questions require you to demonstrate your understanding by writing original responses to the given prompts. These may take the form of short written answers or extended essay-style responses.

Scoring Information

 The Praxis Teaching Reading: K–12 exam uses a scaled scoring system. The passing score for each participating state is 156. The only exception is New Jersey, which requires a score of 159.

 Unofficial scores are typically available immediately after completing the exam at most testing centers. Official score reports are generally released within five weeks.

You can take the exam as often as needed to pass, with a 28-day waiting period between attempts.

I. Phonological and Phonemic Awareness (13 Questions)

This category evaluates your understanding of oral language development and early literacy instruction. Questions focus on instructional strategies that support students from emergent literacy through advanced phonemic awareness.

Praxis Teaching Reading: K–12 (5206) Exam Registration

If the exam is required for admission into a teacher preparation program or for state certification, you must first create an account with the Educational Testing Service (ETS). After setting up your account, you can proceed with registering for the exam.
