GACE School Counseling (722) Test Format and Structure

The GACE School Counseling assessment is a computer-based certification exam consisting of three independently scored testlets. Candidates may choose to take each testlet separately or complete all three during a single testing appointment.

Questions are presented as selected-response (multiple-choice) items that assess critical thinking, professional judgment, and the ability to apply counseling knowledge to realistic school-based situations.

The assessment blueprint is aligned with the professional standards established by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and reflects the competencies expected of beginning school counselors working in Georgia's public schools.

GACE 722 School Counseling Scoring Information

The GACE School Counseling (722) assessment uses a scaled scoring system designed to ensure fairness and consistency across different versions of the exam. Rather than receiving a percentage score, candidates receive scaled scores for each testlet and an overall assessment result.

To successfully pass the assessment, candidates must earn a combined passing score of 220 while also meeting the minimum required performance standard for each individual testlet. Because each testlet measures different professional competencies, strong performance in one area cannot fully compensate for significantly weaker performance in another.

Following the completion of the examination, unofficial score information for selected-response questions may be available shortly after testing. Official score reports are released according to Pearson's published score reporting schedule and become available through the candidate's Pearson GACE account.

Your official score report typically includes:

  • Overall assessment status
  • Individual testlet scores
  • Pass or did not pass designation
  • Performance by competency area
  • Certification reporting information

Candidates who do not achieve a passing score may retake the assessment after satisfying the applicable retest policy established by Pearson and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Understanding your score report can help you identify strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to focus your study efforts before retaking any required testlets.

How the GACE 722 Is Scored

The assessment is designed to measure the competencies expected of newly certified school counselors rather than rank candidates against one another. Questions are carefully developed, reviewed by Georgia educators, and statistically analyzed to ensure they accurately measure the knowledge and skills required for professional practice.

The exam evaluates a candidate's ability to:

  • Apply counseling theories to authentic school situations.
  • Promote academic, career, and social-emotional development.
  • Design and implement comprehensive school counseling programs.
  • Interpret assessment and student data.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners.
  • Demonstrate ethical decision-making and legal compliance.
  • Support equitable educational opportunities for diverse student populations.

Success on the GACE 722 depends on developing both a solid understanding of counseling principles and the ability to apply those principles in practical educational settings.
