Which revision of the highlighted portion (local trees, such as) is most effective and grammatically correct?

Answers
  1. correct
Explanation

The Correct Answer is: B. local trees such as
This revision is most effective because no additional punctuation is needed between “local trees” and “such as.” The phrase “such as” naturally introduces examples, so the sentence flows smoothly and remains grammatically correct without extra commas, dashes, or semicolons. It maintains clarity while keeping the sentence concise.

Why the other options are incorrect:

  • A. No change
Using a comma before “such as” is unnecessary here. While not strictly wrong, it adds an unneeded pause, making the sentence slightly less fluid and less professional in style.
  • C. local trees — such as
An em dash is too strong in this context. It implies a dramatic pause or emphasis that isn’t needed for this straightforward example, making the sentence stylistically heavier than necessary.
  • D. local trees; such as A semicolon is incorrect because “such as the Inga” is not an independent clause. Using a semicolon here is grammatically wrong and disrupts the sentence flow.
