Test Format Details

The AEPA Professional Knowledge - Early Childhood exam is designed to comprehensively assess entry-level educator competency across all major domains of early childhood education. The test measures not only content knowledge but also your ability to apply this knowledge to real teaching situations and make sound professional decisions.

The exam uses a computer-based delivery system with both selected-response questions (traditional multiple-choice, true/false, and matching formats) and constructed-response questions. Selected-response questions allow you to select the correct answer from provided options, while constructed-response (written performance assignment) questions require you to compose written responses of at least a few paragraphs addressing specific teaching scenarios or professional situations.

Your combined raw score from both the selected-response section and the written performance assignment section is converted to a scaled score ranging from 100 to 300, with a minimum passing score of 240. This conversion ensures fairness across different test administrations.

For online proctored appointments, you will receive a 15-minute break after completing the selected-response questions section and before beginning the written performance assignments section. After this break, you will begin the written performance assignments section and will no longer have access to the selected-response questions section.

Time Allocation Recommendations:

  • Foundations of Early Childhood Education: 55 minutes (approximately 28% of questions)
  • Promoting Child Development and Learning: 75 minutes (approximately 36% of questions)
  • Child Guidance and Inclusive Learning Communities: 38 minutes (approximately 18% of questions)
  • Family and Community Relationships: 38 minutes (approximately 18% of questions)
  • Written Performance Assignments: 50+ minutes (3 assignments requiring several paragraphs each)

Scoring Information

All AEPA tests are scored using a scaled scoring system, with test results converted to a range from 100 to 300, with a scaled score of 240 representing the minimum passing score. The passing score of 240 was established by the Arizona State Board of Education based on recommendations from committees of Arizona educators and reflects the level of knowledge and skills required for entry-level educators in Arizona public schools.

The Professional Knowledge - Early Childhood test is scored by first obtaining a raw score by combining points gained from the selected-response questions and the 3 written performance assignments. Those points are then placed on a scale from 100 to 300, and a score of 240 or higher is considered passing.

If your total test score is 240 or more, you have passed the test. If your total test score falls below 240, you have not passed the test. Score reports include diagnostic information about your performance on each subarea and individual test objective, which can help you identify specific areas for improvement if you need to retake the exam.

If you do not pass the exam, you may retake it after a mandatory 30-day waiting period. You will need to pay the exam fee the first two times you retake the exam. After you have taken the exam three times, your exam fee is waived for all additional retakes.
