Survey of Election Results
After a recent city election in Middleton, the Middleton Press sent a survey to 1,000 randomly selected subscribers. The survey asked about their participation in the recent election and about their suggestions for the new city council. Seven hundred subscribers returned the survey. Their responses to three of the survey questions are summarized below.
1. Did you vote in the city election?
Yes 68% No 32%
2. Did you contribute money to elect any of the candidates in the recent election?
Yes 51% No 49%
3. In your opinion, which of the following issues should the new city council
examine first?
A. Adequacy of library facilities 25%
B. Adequacy of parking facilities 17%
C. Adequacy of recreation facilities 43%
D. Adequacy of fire and police facilities 15%
Based on the results reported for question 3, the respondents apparently were most satisfied with which of the following city facilities?
Correct Answer: D. Fire and police
The respondents were most satisfied with fire and police facilities because only 15% selected that option as the most urgent issue to be examined. A lower percentage indicates fewer concerns or complaints, suggesting greater overall satisfaction. When citizens identify other areas—like recreation or library facilities—as needing improvement, it implies they find fire and police services adequate and not a pressing problem in their community.
Why Other Options are Incorrect:
A. Library
Twenty-five percent of respondents chose library facilities as the top issue for the council to address, indicating moderate dissatisfaction. If a quarter of participants consider libraries a priority, it reflects that they see room for improvement.
B. Parking
Seventeen percent identified parking as the main issue needing council attention, suggesting some dissatisfaction with current parking availability and conditions. Although not the highest concern, it’s still seen as needing improvement compared to fire and police services.
C. Recreation
Forty-three percent selected recreation facilities, the highest percentage overall. This shows the greatest dissatisfaction among respondents. When nearly half believe recreation should be addressed first, it clearly signals that residents are least satisfied with these facilities.
