1. In-School GED Prep Program: If you are attending an in-school GED prep program, you must: 

• Submit an underage testing waiver signed by your parent/guardian and a school official to the state office. You can access the waiver on the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation website.

1. Online Exam: For online testing, a parent or guardian must be present at the pre-test check-in to give consent and authorize the underage tester to be recorded during testing. If the parent or guardian is not present, the exam session will be revoked.
2. School Attendance: If you are a student attending public or private school and are 16 or 17 years old, you may take the test if one of the following conditions apply: 

• Verification from a school administrator that you will not graduate with your cohort class due to credit deficiency;
• Authorization from a court services officer;
• A court order requiring you to enter the program;
• Verification that you are under the direction of the Department of Corrections; or
• Verification that you are enrolled in Job Corps as authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, as amended to January 1, 2009.

1. Foreign Exchange Student: If you are a foreign exchange student who is 16 or 17 years old, you may take the GED test if you are no longer enrolled in the host district and present signed permission from a legal parent or guardian. The written permission must be properly notarized by either a notary public in the United States or a comparable entity in the parent/guardian’s country of origin.

Do I Have to Be a Resident of South Dakota to Take the SD GED Test?

SD GED Test Retake Policies

 If you do not pass the GED test on your initial attempt, you can retake the test to get a score above 145 points.

• Waiting Period

For in-person tests, there is no waiting period for the first three attempts. After the third attempt, a 60-day waiting period applies before the next attempt

• Number of Retakes

There is no limit to the number of times you can retake a subject test. You can retake each subject up to three times with no waiting period, and after the third attempt, you must wait 60 days before retesting.

After passing the GED test, you will automatically receive one free electronic diploma and one free electronic transcript. However, to receive a free printed diploma, you will need to take additional steps.

Electronic Diploma and Transcript

Once you have passed all GED® test subjects and earned your diploma, download links for your electronic diploma and transcript will be emailed to the address associated with your GED® account. 

These links are only available for a limited time, so download your electronic documents right away. Follow the instructions in the email to access your PDF documents. These electronic credentials are valuable and can be forwarded to employers and colleges that accept them. 

The PDF documents are verified by GED Testing Service/Parchment each time they are opened using Blue Ribbon Security. The blue ribbon symbol in the PDF assures the authenticity of the digital credential.

Printed Diploma

You can order your printed diploma through your GED® account at GED.com. After logging in, go to “My Scores” and select “Order Duplicates.” Choose the “Diploma” option and then select the “Printed Diploma – Free” option.

Next, provide the recipient’s name and mailing address for the diploma. The free diploma link is available only until it is used and can be used only once. Carefully follow the instructions provided during the ordering process. You can request your GED transcript and diploma through this link
