Kentucky GED

In Kentucky, the GED test is the primary high school equivalency exam accepted by the state. The GED test is overseen by Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE), a division of the Kentucky Department of Education.

In 2015, there were 47,329 GED test-takers in Kentucky, with 27,318 completers (57.7% completion rate) and 26,060 passers (59.8% pass rate among completers). In 2022-2023, Kentucky had a 4-year high school graduation rate of 91.4% and a 5-year graduation rate of 92.5% for public school students.

While the GED is the primary high school equivalency pathway, Kentucky does not currently offer high school credit recovery programs leading to a diploma or competency-based National External Diploma Programs (NEDP) that some other states provide.

The state of Kentucky GED test remains the primary route for Kentuckians to obtain a high school equivalency credential, although the state has faced challenges in recruiting and serving a larger portion of those without a diploma through adult education programs.

Kentucky GED Requirements

How Old Do I Need to Be to Take the GED Kentucky test?

You must be at least 19 years old to take the test. If you are under 19, you need to have been officially withdrawn from public or private school for at least 90 days before testing.

While the standard age requirement is 19, Kentucky allows certain exceptions for those under the age of 19 to take the GED exam under specific conditions:

18 Years Old

You may qualify at age 18 if you meet one of the following criteria:

• Officially withdrawn from school for at least 90 days, as certified by your local school district (superintendents can waive this 90-day waiting period).
• Committed or placed in an adult correctional facility.
• Enrolled in the Job Corps Program of Instruction.
• Enrolled in a National Guard Youth “ChalleNGe” program.

17 Years Old

At age 17, you may be eligible if you are:

• A State Agency Child as defined by KRS 158.135(1)(a).
• Enrolled in a district-operated alternative program, not on track to graduate (per local board of education criteria), and have passed at least one section of the GED Ready practice test.

All 17 and 18 -year-old test-takers must complete the withdrawal form here. For those taking the GED test online, a parent or legal guardian must be present during the pre-test check-in to provide consent and authorize recording of the underage test-taker during the exam session. If a parent or guardian is not present, the online exam will be revoked.

You must be a resident of Kentucky with a Kentucky mailing address to take the GED test in Kentucky. Kentucky requires that GED testers have a Kentucky address. If a tester does not have a primary ID with a Kentucky address, we must ask for a second form of ID, such as a utility bill or other document that shows the test taker’s Kentucky address.

Some states permit people who do not reside there to take the GED® test, while others do not. You will need to verify the residency requirement for the state in which you are interested in testing. Check the residency requirements.

Free GED® Testing in Kentucky

The state of Kentucky is offering a remarkable opportunity for eligible adults taking their first GED exam. Kentucky GED Costs

Whether you choose to take the GED test at a testing center or online, the cost remains the same in Kentucky. As of July 1, 2023, the state charges $36 per subject for the GED test, regardless of the testing method. When scheduling your GED test, you’ll be required to pay online using a debit or credit card. Kentucky GED Retake Policies 

If you don’t pass a subject area test on your first attempt, there is no waiting period required before retaking the test in Kentucky. However, after taking a subject test three times, you’ll need to wait 60 days before retesting for the fourth and any subsequent attempts. It’s important to note that there is no limit to the number of times you can test in a year.

For those opting for the online proctored GED exam, you are allowed one retake before a 60-day waiting period is imposed. After taking a subject test twice online, you’ll need to wait 60 days before retesting.

Starting July 1, 2023, you will receive one discounted retake for every GED test subject you purchase but don’t pass. This discounted retake offer is valid for 365 days after your initial full-price test. The GED Testing Service waives its $26 testing fee for retakes, but you’ll need to pay a $10 test center fee in Kentucky.

This “one full price, one discount” offer repeats until you pass the test.

Note: As a limited-time offer, you can receive up to two discounted retakes for exams taken at testing centers, as long as both retakes are completed by June 30, 2024. Fortunately, discounted retakes are not offered for the online proctored exam.

Besides Kentucky, in New Jersey, you will receive one discounted* retake for every GED® test subject you purchase but don’t pass. the following states and territories offer discounts for GED test retakes:

1. Minnesota: Offers discounted testing options for candidates who need to retake the GED exam. Specific details on the discount amount were not provided, but the state is known for its supportive testing initiatives.
2. Maryland: Provides a discounted rate of $45 for first-time testers, which covers all four modules of the GED exam, making it $11.25 per subtest.
3. Washington, D.C.: Offers a discounted rate of $15 for the entire GED test, which breaks down to $3.75 per module.
4. Arkansas: Charges $16 for GED testing, which is $4 per subtest, making it more affordable for retakes.
5. Virginia: Similar to Kentucky, Virginia also offers free testing for first-time testers, with potential discounts for retakes based on enrollment in approved adult education programs.
6. Texas: Recently introduced a voucher program that allows eligible test-takers to take the GED exam at no cost, which may apply to retakes as well.
7. New Mexico: Also offers a voucher program for eligible candidates, allowing them to take the GED exam for free, including retakes.
8. Connecticut: While there is a modest administration fee, Connecticut offers free testing for certain eligible candidates, particularly first-time testers.

How Do I Apply for Disability Accommodations for the Kentucky GED?

Testing accommodations are available for individuals with documented disabilities taking the GED test in Kentucky. To request accommodations, test-takers should specify the need in their personal information section on their MyGED account at www.GED.com.
