Comcast will pay a $1.5 million penalty after a contractor\u2019s security lapse exposed personal details belonging to more than 237,000 past and present customers, according to an announcement from the Federal Communications Commission on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The FCC said the incident stemmed from a 2024 <\/span>cyberattack<\/span><\/a> targeting Financial Business and Consumer Solutions, a debt collection vendor Comcast had partnered with until 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The firm, known as FBCS, experienced a breach that revealed sensitive information tied to Comcast\u2019s internet, television, and home security users. Regulators also noted that FBCS had already filed for bankruptcy before publicly acknowledging the breach in August 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the settlement, <\/span>Comcast<\/span><\/a> has agreed to implement a new compliance framework aimed at bolstering oversight of third-party vendors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These added requirements will tighten expectations around customer privacy, data management, and the protection of any personal information handled on Comcast\u2019s behalf.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement addressing the matter, Comcast emphasized that it \u201cwas not responsible for and has not conceded any wrongdoing in connection with this incident.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The company also pointed out that none of its internal systems were compromised and reaffirmed that <\/span>FBCS<\/span><\/a> had been obligated to follow Comcast\u2019s established vendor security protocols.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
