Samsung Electronics<\/span><\/a>, the world\u2019s leading memory\u2011chip manufacturer, raised the prices of certain memory chips this month by up to 60\u202f% compared with September, according to two individuals familiar with the matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These particular chips are in short supply as the global race to construct AI data centres fuels demand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Its shares \u2014 along with those of SK Hynix and U.S. chip\u2011makers \u2014 surged sharply, reflecting the market\u2019s recognition of how the artificial\u2011intelligence boom is driving extreme demand for modules designed for AI workloads as well as memory chips that feed those units.<\/span><\/p>\n

The price increase comes after Samsung opted to postpone its usual monthly announcement of contract\u2011supply pricing in October, the sources say. Typically the company publishes these details each month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The surge in memory\u2011chip prices \u2014 primarily in server applications \u2014 is likely to raise costs for major firms expanding their data\u2011infrastructure build\u2011out. It also threatens to push up the prices of consumer devices like smartphones and PCs that incorporate the same memory technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExtreme prices being paid\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n

Industry executives are feeling the pressure. \u201cMany of the largest server makers and data\u2011centre builders are now accepting that they won\u2019t get nearly enough product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The price premiums being paid are extreme,\u201d said Tobey Gonnerman, president of the semiconductor distributor Fusion Worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He added that Samsung\u2019s contract price for a 32\u2011gigabyte DDR5 memory\u2011module rose to US$239 in November, up from US$149 in September.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following Reuters\u2019 initial disclosure, shares of <\/span>U.S. chip\u2011makers <\/span><\/a>responded positively \u2014 for instance, Micron Technology jumped 4\u202f%. On Monday, Samsung\u2019s stock gained roughly 3\u202f%, while SK\u202fHynix spiked about 6\u202f%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The three companies were recovering after recent declines tied to concerns over high AI valuations. DDR memory chips are used in servers, PCs and other devices to store data temporarily and facilitate fast data transfers and retrievals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung also increased prices of 16\u202fGB DDR5 and 128\u202fGB DDR5 chips by approximately 50\u202f%, bringing them to about US$135 and US$1,194 respectively. The cost of 64\u202fGB and 96\u202fGB DDR5 units rose by more than 30\u202f%, Gonnerman stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A second source, who spoke off the record, verified the hikes and attributed the information to Samsung\u2019s internal briefings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung declined to comment publicly. At the same time, it announced that it will build a new chip\u2011production line in South Korea, anticipating that AI\u2011driven demand will grow over both the mid and long term.<\/span><\/p>\n

The shortage of memory chips has become so acute that some customers are engaging in panic buying, according to industry analysts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SMIC, China\u2019s leading contract chip\u2011maker, announced last Friday that the memory shortfall has caused its clients to defer orders for other kinds of chips used in their products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile<\/span> Xiaomi <\/span><\/a>\u2014 a Chinese company active in smartphones, electronics and cars \u2014 warned last month that the surging memory\u2011costs have increased phone manufacturing expenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the shortage represents an advantage for Samsung, which has lagged in offering advanced AI\u2011chips and until recently had not seen a major profit boost.<\/span><\/p>\n

Advantage for Samsung\u2019s positioning<\/b><\/h2>\n

Because Samsung\u2019s transition into AI\u2011chip production has been slower than competitors, it apparently enjoys stronger pricing power compared to smaller memory\u2011chip rivals such as SK\u202fHynix and Micron, according to Jeff Kim, head of research at KB Securities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Analyst Ellie Wang of TrendForce projected that Samsung is likely to raise quarterly contract\u2011pricing by 40\u202f% to 50\u202f% in the October\u2013December period \u2014 above the roughly 30\u202f% increase anticipated across the broader industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey are really confident that the price is going to increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the main reason is that now the demand is really strong, and everyone is working on long\u2011term agreements with the suppliers,\u201d she said, adding that these contracts cover either 2026 alone or both 2026 and 2027 combined.<\/span><\/p>\n
