OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of introducing a new web browser driven by artificial intelligence, according to three individuals familiar with the company\u2019s plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The release is expected in the coming weeks and is designed to transform how users navigate the internet. This browser may also grant OpenAI deeper access to a critical aspect of Google\u2019s dominance\u2014user data.<\/span><\/p>\n

If integrated successfully with ChatGPT\u2019s vast user base of 500 million weekly active users, the browser could become a significant challenge to Google Chrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chrome plays a central role in Alphabet\u2019s advertising empire, providing detailed insights into user behavior that enhance ad targeting and direct traffic to Google\u2019s own search engine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since nearly 75% of Alphabet\u2019s revenue comes from advertising, OpenAI’s move could pose a notable threat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sources noted that the new browser will feature a built-in, chat-style interface similar to ChatGPT. Rather than redirecting users to external websites, many interactions could remain within this interface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This approach aligns with OpenAI\u2019s wider strategy of embedding its tools into users\u2019 everyday personal and professional routines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expanding AI Into Daily Browsing<\/b><\/h2>\n

Since the 2022 launch of ChatGPT, <\/span>OpenAI<\/span><\/a>\u2014under CEO Sam Altman\u2014has shaken up the tech industry. But with rising competition from Google and startups like Anthropic, the company is aggressively seeking new growth channels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In May, OpenAI acquired io, an AI hardware firm led by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n

The upcoming browser is expected to integrate OpenAI\u2019s \u201cOperator\u201d and other AI agent tools that can complete web-based tasks for users, such as making reservations or auto-filling forms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This type of real-time interaction offers a more hands-on AI experience tailored to daily internet use.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, OpenAI faces a steep challenge.<\/span> Google Chrome<\/span><\/a> commands over 66% of the global browser market with more than 3 billion users, according to StatCounter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s Safari holds second place with just 16%. Meanwhile, OpenAI recently reported 3 million business subscribers to ChatGPT.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other competitors are also entering the space. Perplexity just launched its AI browser \u201cComet,\u201d while Brave and The Browser Company have released browsers with internet summarizing capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategic Positioning and Long-Term Intentions<\/b><\/h2>\n

Chrome\u2019s data collection capabilities have drawn antitrust scrutiny, with the Department of Justice seeking its breakup after a court ruling deemed Google\u2019s control of search to be unlawful.<\/span><\/p>\n

OpenAI\u2019s browser is reportedly built using Chromium\u2014Google\u2019s open-source browser foundation, which also underpins Microsoft Edge and Opera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OpenAI has also recruited two former Google vice presidents who helped build Chrome. While the company once explored acquiring Chrome\u2014an option that remains unavailable\u2014it ultimately chose to develop a standalone browser for greater autonomy over user data.<\/span><\/p>\n
