Ferriday High is 90% Black, while Vidalia High is predominantly white at 62%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Davis, a father from Ferriday, said the divide sends a message: \u201cwe\u2019re not supposed to have the finer things,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s almost like our kids don\u2019t deserve it.\u201d Both schools are part of Concordia Parish, which remains under a decades-old court desegregation order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, momentum is building to end these orders, as some see them as outdated. In a policy shift, the Justice Department recently began easing these court orders, starting with one in Plaquemines Parish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harmeet Dhillon, head of the department\u2019s civil rights division, noted other cases would soon \u201cbite the dust.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican Governor Jeff Landry and his attorney general have advocated for lifting these orders, arguing they burden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prepsaret.com\/ged\/major-differences-between-a-ged-and-a-high-school-diploma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schools <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unnecessarily. Though intended to be temporary, these court mandates have endured for decades, and stark racial disparities remain in many districts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Related story:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/prepsaret.com\/news\/trump-suspends-entry-of-international-students-at-harvard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump Suspends Entry of International Students at Harvard<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>A Fight Over the Future of School Equity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil rights advocates argue these orders remain crucial tools to combat the lingering effects of segregation, citing cases like Concordia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deuel Ross of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund emphasized, \u201cConcordia is one where it\u2019s old, but a lot is happening there.\u201d Ross noted that many of these cases are still active in addressing inequalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice Department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proposal to merge majority white and Black schools in Concordia was rejected, with Vidalia residents fearing such moves would disrupt their communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Concordia superintendent Paul Nelson, who opposes maintaining the order, remarked, \u201cIt\u2019s time to move on. Let\u2019s start looking to build for the future, not looking back to what our grandparents may have gone through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Ferriday coach Derrick Davis sees unity as a potential solution. \u201cIt seems to me, if we\u2019d all combine, we can all get what we need,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite growing efforts to dissolve these mandates, over 120 districts in the South, including several in Louisiana, remain under desegregation orders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without them, families would have little recourse beyond costly lawsuits.
