Among the materials cited is the book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, according to the complaint, was used to teach elementary students that whiteness is akin to a deal with the devil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor called the allegations &#8220;shocking,&#8221; stating, \u201cThe Department of Education will not allow districts that receive federal funding to become safe spaces for racial segregation or any other unlawful discriminatory practices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The department has also warned the district that it could lose federal funding if found in violation of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/laws-and-policy\/civil-rights-laws\/race-color-and-national-origin-discrimination\/education-and-title-vi#:~:text=Title%20VI%20of%20the%20Civil%20Rights%20Act%20of%201964%20prohibits,that%20receive%20federal%20financial%20assistance.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which prohibits race-based discrimination in federally funded programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0District 65 receives over $10 million annually from federal sources, which supports early childhood education, low-income programs, and special education.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>District Response and Historical Context<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evanston RoundTable<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, District 65 spokesperson Hannah Dillow confirmed receipt of the investigation notice and said the district \u201cwill continue to fulfill the intent and promise of equal protection and nondiscrimination.\u201d She added that the complaint misrepresents \u201clawful and important\u201d efforts to ensure all students receive quality education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the first time Deemar has challenged the district\u2019s policies. Her initial complaint in 2019 led the Trump administration to find the district in violation of civil rights law. That finding was later rescinded under the Biden administration, which dismissed a 2021 federal lawsuit brought by Deemar. Judge John J.
