OpenAI Readies AI-Powered Browser to Compete with Google Chrome

OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of introducing a new web browser driven by artificial intelligence, according to three individuals familiar with the company’s plans. 

The release is expected in the coming weeks and is designed to transform how users navigate the internet. This browser may also grant OpenAI deeper access to a critical aspect of Google’s dominance—user data.

If integrated successfully with ChatGPT’s vast user base of 500 million weekly active users, the browser could become a significant challenge to Google Chrome. 

Chrome plays a central role in Alphabet’s advertising empire, providing detailed insights into user behavior that enhance ad targeting and direct traffic to Google’s own search engine. 

Since nearly 75% of Alphabet’s revenue comes from advertising, OpenAI’s move could pose a notable threat.

Sources noted that the new browser will feature a built-in, chat-style interface similar to ChatGPT. Rather than redirecting users to external websites, many interactions could remain within this interface. 

This approach aligns with OpenAI’s wider strategy of embedding its tools into users’ everyday personal and professional routines.

OpenAI has not issued any official comments, and the sources spoke anonymously as they are not authorized to discuss internal plans.

Expanding AI Into Daily Browsing

Since the 2022 launch of ChatGPT, OpenAI—under CEO Sam Altman—has shaken up the tech industry. But with rising competition from Google and startups like Anthropic, the company is aggressively seeking new growth channels. 

In May, OpenAI acquired io, an AI hardware firm led by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion.

The upcoming browser is expected to integrate OpenAI’s “Operator” and other AI agent tools that can complete web-based tasks for users, such as making reservations or auto-filling forms. 

This type of real-time interaction offers a more hands-on AI experience tailored to daily internet use.

However, OpenAI faces a steep challenge. Google Chrome commands over 66% of the global browser market with more than 3 billion users, according to StatCounter. 

Apple’s Safari holds second place with just 16%. Meanwhile, OpenAI recently reported 3 million business subscribers to ChatGPT.

Other competitors are also entering the space. Perplexity just launched its AI browser “Comet,” while Brave and The Browser Company have released browsers with internet summarizing capabilities.

Strategic Positioning and Long-Term Intentions

Chrome’s data collection capabilities have drawn antitrust scrutiny, with the Department of Justice seeking its breakup after a court ruling deemed Google’s control of search to be unlawful.

OpenAI’s browser is reportedly built using Chromium—Google’s open-source browser foundation, which also underpins Microsoft Edge and Opera. 

OpenAI has also recruited two former Google vice presidents who helped build Chrome. While the company once explored acquiring Chrome—an option that remains unavailable—it ultimately chose to develop a standalone browser for greater autonomy over user data.
