Kentucky HiSET Alternative: GED Changes, Costs & Options

Start Exam Prep Now

Is the HiSET Available in Kentucky? No. Kentucky does not offer the HiSET exam. The GED is the only state-approved high school equivalency test in Kentucky. All employers, colleges, training programs, and the military in Kentucky recognize the GED as the official path to a high school equivalency diploma. The credential earned is the Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma.

Kentucky is among the majority of U.S. states that have standardized exclusively on the GED. The HiSET — created by ETS (Educational Testing Services) and available in approximately 20 states — is not offered or accepted in Kentucky. There are no HiSET testing centers in Kentucky and no state agency issues or recognizes HiSET credentials for Kentucky high school equivalency purposes.

The GED in Kentucky is administered by Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE), the state agency under the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet responsible for providing free adult education services in all 120 counties of the Commonwealth. The State GED Administrator is Benita Wilhoite, based at the Office of Adult Education in Frankfort.

Which States Still Offer HiSET?

Understanding the broader landscape helps if you have family in neighboring states or are relocating. Note that neighboring Tennessee offers the HiSET — a common source of confusion for southern Kentucky residents:

State Available Exam(s)
Kentucky GED only — HiSET not available
Tennessee (neighboring state) HiSET is the primary exam in Tennessee — available at Workforce Essentials and other providers
Missouri (neighboring state) Both GED and HiSET available
Ohio (neighboring state) Both GED and HiSET available
West Virginia (neighboring state) GED only — HiSET not available
Virginia (neighboring state) GED only — HiSET not available
Indiana (neighboring state) GED only — HiSET not available
Massachusetts HiSET is the primary exam; GED not offered for state HSE
Hawaii, California Both GED and HiSET available

Important note: Kentucky has a residency requirement — you must have a Kentucky mailing address to take the GED in Kentucky. If you relocate to Tennessee or Ohio, you would need to start fresh with that state’s designated exam. Kentucky GED subjects already passed cannot be transferred or combined with another state’s exam scores.

What Is the Kentucky GED?

The GED (General Educational Development) test is a four-subject high school equivalency examination developed by GED Testing Service LLC, a joint venture of the American Council on Education and Pearson. In Kentucky, it is administered by the Office of Adult Education under the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet.

The credential earned is officially called the Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma. Kentucky is one of the most proactive states in the country when it comes to GED access — the state pays for the first GED test in each subject plus limited retakes, while funding lasts, through a promo code system described in detail in Section 4.

Kentucky GED Eligibility Requirements

Kentucky has some of the most specific eligibility requirements of any state. Unlike many states where adults 18 and older simply register and test, Kentucky requires proof of residency, a mandatory GED Ready practice test, and specific age rules with the minimum no-conditions age set at 19. All requirements come from official KYAE and GED.com Kentucky policies.

Adults 19 and Older

  • Must be at least 19 years old to test without any special conditions or approvals
  • Must be a resident of Kentucky with a Kentucky mailing address — proof of residency required. Contact the state office at 502-573-5114 for residency questions.
  • Must not currently be enrolled in a high school program
  • Must not already hold a high school diploma or equivalent credential
  • Must pass the GED Ready practice test (offered free at Kentucky Adult Education centers) in each subject before scheduling the official GED exam — this is required for BOTH in-person and online testing in Kentucky
  • No GED prep class enrollment required, though it is strongly recommended

Students Age 18

18-year-olds may take the GED in Kentucky only if they meet one of the following conditions:

  • Has officially withdrawn from public or private school for at least 90 days, as certified by the local school district — note: the local school superintendent may choose to waive this 90-day waiting period
  • Is committed or placed in an adult correctional facility
  • Is enrolled in the Job Corps Program of Instruction
  • Is enrolled in a National Guard Youth ‘ChalleNGe’ program

All 18-year-old testers must complete the Documentation of Underage GED Testing Form regardless of which category applies. Submit the form by one of the following methods:

  • Email a scanned copy to [email protected]
  • Mail to: Kentucky GED Testing, 500 Mero Street, Mail Stop 5SC, Frankfort, KY 40601
  • Fax to: 502-696-5863

Students Age 17

17-year-olds may take the GED in Kentucky only if they fall into one of these specific categories as defined by KRS 158.143:

  • State Agency Child as defined by KRS 158.135(1)(a)
  • Student in a district-operated alternative education program who is not on track to graduate (as defined by the local board of education) and has passed at least one (1) section of the GED Ready test

Note: General age 17 testing without extraordinary circumstances is not permitted in Kentucky. Kentucky’s minimum standard age is 19, making it one of the strictest states for underage testing.

Special Groups

The following groups should email [email protected] for additional instructions specific to their situation:

  • Students enrolled in Job Corps
  • Students enrolled in the ChalleNGe Academy
  • State agency children
  • Students in juvenile detention centers or education programs
  • Students in district-operated alternative education programs
Online Testing — Additional Rule for Under-19 Test-Takers

For ALL underage testers (under 19) taking the GED online: a parent or guardian must be physically present at the pre-test check-in to give consent and authorize the underage tester to be recorded during testing. If the parent or guardian is not present, the exam session will be revoked immediately.

The GED Ready Requirement

Critical Kentucky-Specific Rule: GED Ready Is REQUIRED for ALL Testing

Kentucky is one of the very few states that requires ALL GED test-takers — both in-person and online — to first pass the GED Ready Official Practice Test before scheduling the official GED exam. This is not optional in Kentucky. You cannot schedule any GED subject test without first achieving a passing (‘Likely to Pass’ / green) score on the corresponding GED Ready practice test.

The GED Ready test is offered FREE at Kentucky Adult Education Prep Centers in every county.

This requirement is one of Kentucky’s most distinctive GED policies. In most other states, the GED Ready practice test is only required before online testing. In Kentucky, it is required for BOTH in-person testing center and online proctored testing. Here is what this means in practice:

  • You must create a GED.com account and take the GED Ready practice test for each of the four subjects before you can schedule any official GED exam
  • The GED Ready test is offered free at KYAE Adult Education Prep Centers — local KYAE staff will help you create your GED.com account and pass the GED Ready tests at no cost
  • If you prefer, you can take the GED Ready at your own expense online through GED.com and then use the state’s free promo code — you do not have to attend a KYAE center to take the GED Ready
  • Once you pass the GED Ready for a specific subject, you can schedule that subject’s official exam
  • The GED Ready ‘green’ (Likely to Pass) score is a strong predictor of passing the official exam — this requirement significantly improves Kentucky’s first-attempt pass rates

KYAE’s rationale for this requirement: ensuring test-takers are genuinely prepared before investing in and sitting for the official exam reduces wasted testing attempts and improves overall completion rates across the Commonwealth’s 120 counties.

Kentucky GED Subjects, Format, and Test Length

The Kentucky GED consists of four subject tests, each administered separately. You can take them in any order and on different days. In Kentucky, you can take all four subjects in one day at an in-person testing center if the schedule allows — however, for online testing, each subject must be scheduled and taken separately.

Subject Test Overview

Subject Time Limit Content and Format
Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) 150 min (10-min break included) Reading comprehension, extended response essay (45 min), grammar and writing mechanics; multiple choice, drag-and-drop, extended response
Mathematical Reasoning 115 minutes Basic math, geometry, graphs, algebra, and functions; on-screen calculator for Part 2; calculator-free in Part 1
Science 90 minutes Life science, physical science (chemistry and physics), earth and space science; data interpretation from graphs, charts, and diagrams
Social Studies 70 minutes U.S. history, civics and government, economics, geography; map and primary source document analysis

Question Types on the Kentucky GED

  • Multiple choice: Select the correct answer from four options — the most common format across all subjects
  • Drag-and-drop: Move items into correct sequences, categories, or locations on maps and diagrams
  • Fill-in-the-blank (gridded response): Type a numerical answer directly — common in math
  • Short answer: Write a brief response (used in Science)
  • Extended response (essay): Write a full argumentative essay using provided source texts (RLA — 45 minutes)
  • Hot spot: Click on a specific location on an image, diagram, or map

Passing Score and Score Levels

Score Level Score Range and Meaning
Below Passing 100–144 per subject — must retake; score report shows specific areas for improvement
Passing (High School Equivalency) 145–164 per subject — earns Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma
GED College Ready 165–174 — qualifies for college-level courses without placement testing at many Kentucky institutions
GED College Ready + Credit 175–200 — may earn up to 3 college credits per subject at participating institutions
Score availability Same day, typically within 3 hours of completing a subject test

The College Ready score tiers have real financial value for Kentucky adults planning to attend KCTCS community colleges or other Kentucky institutions — they can bypass placement testing and avoid the cost of remedial coursework.

How to Get Your GED in Kentucky: Step-by-Step

The process in Kentucky is designed to be fully supported by free KYAE centers. Here is the official process from KYAE and GED.com:

  • Contact your nearest Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE) center — free services are available in all 120 Kentucky counties. KYAE staff will help you get started, create your GED.com account, and prepare you for the GED Ready practice test. Find your county contact at kyskillsu.ky.gov/Pages/County-Contacts.aspx
  • Create a free account at GED.com — provide your full legal name, date of birth, and a Kentucky mailing address. Your address is verified for residency purposes.
  • If you are under 19: complete your documentation first. 18-year-olds need to have withdrawn from school for 90 days (or meet an exception) and must submit the Documentation of Underage GED Testing Form via email ([email protected]), mail, or fax (502-696-5863).
  • Study using free KYAE classes and GED Ready prep. KYAE centers offer free GED preparation classes, free GED Ready practice tests, and full academic support.
  • Take the GED Ready practice test for each subject — this is required before scheduling ANY official GED exam in Kentucky. It is offered free at KYAE centers. You need a ‘green’ (Likely to Pass) score to unlock each subject’s official exam.
  • Once you pass the GED Ready for a subject, schedule that subject’s official exam at GED.com. For test center testing, enter promo code KYFREEGED1 at checkout. For online testing, enter OPKYRETAKE first, then OPKYFREEGED.
  • On test day (in-person): bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Log in to your account 30 minutes before your scheduled online test if testing remotely. Leave phones, smart watches, notes, and food outside the testing area.
No Prep Class Required — But GED Ready IS Required

Kentucky does not require you to attend GED preparation classes before testing. However, the GED Ready practice test is mandatory for all Kentucky test-takers before scheduling any official GED exam. KYAE strongly recommends attending free prep classes at your nearest KYAE center — staff will administer the free GED Ready test and prepare you academically. Adults who use KYAE services have significantly higher pass rates than those who test without preparation.

Kentucky’s Unique Alternative Pathways: GED Plus and Excel Center

Kentucky offers two unique alternative pathways to earn a high school equivalency credential or diploma that go beyond the standard GED route. Both are available to adults who want to combine their credentials with career-focused education.

GED Plus Program (KCTCS)

The GED Plus program, offered through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), allows eligible adults to earn their Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma AND a college certificate simultaneously — tuition-free, in as little as four months. This is one of the most innovative GED programs in the country.

GED Plus Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be at least 19 years old
  • Must not already hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid Kentucky mailing address
  • Must meet the placement and admission requirements of the KCTCS institution

How the GED Plus Credential Works

Rather than passing the standard four GED subject tests, eligible applicants earn the Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma by completing at least 3 credit hours (of 12 total required) in each of the following content fields with a grade of C or higher:

  • Written Communication
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Quantitative Reasoning

Applicants may also receive credit for prior study achievements as indicated on official KCTCS transcripts. The college courses are offered in high-demand technical areas including Healthcare, Construction/Trades, IT/Business Services, Manufacturing, and Logistics.

Upon completing the academic requirements, the student receives an official Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma AND a college certificate credential.

Participating KCTCS Institutions (16 Colleges)

All 16 Kentucky Community and Technical College System colleges participate in the GED Plus program, with locations in over 70 sites across the Commonwealth. Contact your nearest KCTCS college for current enrollment and scheduling:

The Excel Center is a tuition-free adult high school in Louisville — the first of its kind in Kentucky — that awards industry-recognized certifications and a full high school diploma (not a GED) to adult learners. It is operated by Goodwill Industries of Kentucky.

  • Awards a full high school diploma — not a GED or equivalency credential
  • Tuition-free for adult learners
  • Year-round, flexible class schedules
  • Free childcare available
  • Transportation assistance available
  • Life coaches provided for student support
  • Industry-recognized certifications integrated into the curriculum

GED Plus vs. Standard GED vs. Excel Center

Standard GED: Fastest route to a credential; pass 4 subject tests; open to ages 17–18 (with requirements) or 19+; available statewide; free with promo codes while funding lasts

GED Plus (KCTCS): For adults 19+ who want to earn GED credential AND a college certificate simultaneously; tuition-free; takes ~4 months at a KCTCS college; available statewide

Excel Center: For adults in the Louisville area who want a full high school diploma (not an equivalency credential); tuition-free; flexible schedule; includes childcare and life coaches

HiSET vs. GED

Even though the HiSET is not available in Kentucky, understanding the differences between the two exams provides important context — especially for Kentuckians near the Tennessee, Ohio, or Missouri borders where HiSET testing centers exist in neighboring states.

Feature GED (Kentucky) HiSET (Not in Kentucky)
Available in Kentucky? YES NO
Number of subjects 4 5 (Language Arts split into Reading and Writing)
Full battery cost in Kentucky $144 (often FREE with promo codes) Not applicable — not offered in Kentucky
GED Ready required? YES — required for BOTH in-person and online N/A in Kentucky
Passing score per subject 145 out of 200 8 out of 20; essay 2 out of 6; 45 combined
Total test time ~7.5 hours ~7–8 hours
Math difficulty Higher — algebraic reasoning, functions, data analysis; application-focused Slightly lower — broader coverage, lower thresholds
Testing format Computer-based only Computer-based and paper-based (varies by state)
Online testing YES — available in Kentucky HiSET@Home available in some states (not Kentucky)
Score tiers Pass / College Ready (165+) / College Ready + Credit (175+) Pass only — no additional college credit tiers
Residency required? YES — Kentucky mailing address required Varies by state
Language restriction English or Spanish — cannot combine languages to earn credential in Kentucky English and Spanish available; policies vary by state
Military acceptance Yes — all U.S. Armed Forces branches Yes — all U.S. Armed Forces branches
National recognition 98% of U.S. employers and colleges Widely accepted; varies more by region

HiSET vs. GED: Which Is Harder?

  • GED Math is generally considered more challenging — algebraic reasoning, functions, and data interpretation with application-focused questions
  • HiSET covers 5 subjects vs. GED’s 4, but with lower individual passing thresholds (8/20 vs. 145/200) and no College Ready tiers
  • The GED’s College Ready + Credit score tier (175+) provides real financial benefit — potential college credit savings that the HiSET does not offer
  • For Kentucky residents, the comparison is academic — the GED is the only available path, and with free testing through state promo codes and free prep at KYAE centers in every county, Kentucky makes the GED more accessible than almost any other state

How to Pass the Kentucky GED Fast

The average GED preparation time is 2 to 3 months according to GED.com. Kentucky’s mandatory GED Ready requirement means you will be tested on your readiness before you can schedule the official exam — use that required preparation time wisely. Here is what consistently works.

30-Day GED Study Blueprint

Week Focus and Activities
Week 1: Diagnose and target Enroll at your nearest KYAE center and take the free initial skills assessment. Take GED.com free practice previews in all four subjects to establish your academic baseline. Identify your 1–2 weakest subjects and dedicate 70% of study time there. Use official GED.com practice questions daily.
Week 2: Deep subject work Focus on Mathematical Reasoning (most commonly failed GED subject). Study algebra, linear equations, and graphs. Begin Reasoning Through Language Arts — practice reading informational passages, identifying main arguments, and drafting essay responses. Attend free KYAE classes simultaneously.
Week 3: Full subject rotation + timed tests Take one full timed practice test per subject. Address weak areas immediately. Practice the Extended Response essay — structured 4-paragraph argument with a clear thesis, 2–3 body paragraphs with text evidence, and a conclusion. Start preparing for the GED Ready test.
Week 4: GED Ready and scheduling Take the GED Ready practice test (free at KYAE center) per subject. If you score green, use promo code KYFREEGED1 to schedule the official test center exam (or OPKYFREEGED for online). If not green, study the specific weak areas from your GED Ready score report for 3–5 more days and retake GED Ready.

Subject-Specific Tips

Mathematical Reasoning

Do not try to relearn all of high school math. Focus on the five highest-yield areas: basic arithmetic and percentages, ratios and proportions, linear equations, graphs and data interpretation, and basic geometry. Practice with and without the calculator — Part 1 of the Math test is calculator-free. Work through at least 30 word problems. KYAE centers and KCTCS campuses both offer math tutoring as part of free adult education programs.

Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)

You have 45 minutes to write an argumentative essay using provided source texts. Practice the 3-step process: (1) read both passages and identify the main argument, (2) outline your position with 2–3 pieces of text evidence, (3) write a clear introduction, 2–3 body paragraphs with evidence, and a conclusion. Both grammar mechanics and essay organization affect your score. Aim for at least 300 well-organized words. Write at least 3–4 practice essays before test day.

Science and Social Studies

Both tests are heavily data-driven. Most questions require interpreting charts, graphs, maps, or primary source documents — not memorizing facts. Practice reading a single visual (table, graph, diagram) and answering 3–4 related questions as your core skill. For Science, practice interpreting biology diagrams, chemistry equations in context, and physics graphs. For Social Studies, practice reading historical primary sources and economic data charts.

Day-of-Test Checklist

  • Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID — a Kentucky address is required on your ID for residency verification
  • Leave your phone, smart watch, notes, food, drinks, and hats outside the testing room
  • Use scratch paper and a calculator reference sheet provided at the test center for math
  • Pace yourself — flag difficult questions and return to them rather than getting stuck
  • For the Extended Response essay, spend 5 minutes outlining your argument before writing — planned essays consistently score higher
  • For online testing: log in 30 minutes before your session; complete the webcam, ID, and workspace verification prompts; ensure your testing space is private and quiet

Kentucky HiSET Alternative: FAQs

Is the HiSET available in Kentucky?

No. Kentucky does not offer the HiSET exam. The GED is the only state-approved high school equivalency test in Kentucky, administered by the Office of Adult Education (KYAE) under the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet. The official credential is the Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma.

Can I take the GED online in Kentucky?

Yes. Kentucky supports the GED Online Proctored exam. You can take the GED from home or a quiet private space with a computer, webcam, and stable internet. Kentucky’s unique requirement: you must first pass the GED Ready practice test (free at KYAE centers) before scheduling online testing — the same as for in-person testing. Use promo code OPKYFREEGED (after entering OPKYRETAKE first) for free online testing while state funding lasts. Online retakes have a 60-day wait after the 2nd attempt.

Do I need to take the GED Ready practice test in Kentucky?

Yes, Kentucky requires ALL test-takers to pass the GED Ready practice test before scheduling ANY official GED exam, whether in-person or online. This is one of Kentucky’s most distinctive policies. The GED Ready is offered FREE at KYAE Adult Education Prep Centers in every county. You must achieve a ‘green’ (Likely to Pass) score on each subject before that subject’s official exam can be scheduled.

Is the GED free in Kentucky?

Yes, while state funding lasts. The Commonwealth of Kentucky pays for the first GED test in each subject plus up to 2 retakes per subject at test centers and 1 retake per subject online.

To access free testing, first pass the GED Ready practice test (free at a KYAE center), then use promo code KYFREEGED1 for in-person testing or OPKYFREEGED for online testing.

For retakes: KYRETAKE (test center) or OPKYRETAKE (online). Verify current funding availability at kyae.ky.gov.

Is a GED considered a high school diploma in Kentucky?

Yes. The Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma earned through the GED is legally equivalent to a traditional Kentucky high school diploma.

It is accepted by all Kentucky employers, all KCTCS colleges and state universities, all U.S. military branches, and all federal agencies. The GED is accepted by 98% of U.S. colleges and employers.

What is the minimum age for the GED in Kentucky?

The standard minimum age with no additional requirements is 19 years old. 18-year-olds can test if they have been officially withdrawn from school for 90 days (or meet specific exceptions including adult correctional facility, Job Corps, or ChalleNGe Academy enrollment).

17-year-olds can only test under very narrow circumstances: State Agency Children or students in district-operated alternative education programs not on track to graduate. All under-19 testers must submit a Documentation of Underage GED Testing Form.

Does Kentucky have a residency requirement for the GED?

Yes, Kentucky is one of the few states with a residency requirement. You must have a Kentucky mailing address to take the GED in Kentucky. If you have questions about proof of residency, contact the KYAE state office at 502-573-5114.

What is the GED Plus program in Kentucky?

The GED Plus program allows eligible adults (19+) to earn the Commonwealth of Kentucky High School Equivalency Diploma while simultaneously obtaining a KCTCS college certificate — tuition-free, in approximately four months.

Students complete college-level coursework in Written Communication, Natural Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Quantitative Reasoning. All 16 KCTCS colleges participate. Contact your nearest KCTCS college or KYAE center for enrollment.

Can I combine English and Spanish testing to earn my Kentucky GED?

No. Kentucky specifically does not allow combining two different languages to earn the credential. You must complete all four GED subject tests in either English or Spanish — not a mix of both. This is a unique restriction compared to states like Idaho and Kansas, which allow language combinations.

How do I get my Kentucky GED transcript?

After passing all four subjects, you automatically receive a free electronic diploma and transcript via Parchment Exchange, delivered to the email on your GED.com account. Additional transcripts cost $10 each, and replacement diplomas cost $25, both ordered through ged.com/life-after-ged/.

Kentucky Adult Education does NOT verify GED status by phone or email — verifications must go through the official process at GED.com. For credential questions, contact Benita Wilhoite at [email protected] or 502-892-3067.
