Understand the GED Math Test Organization and Grids

The GED Mathematical Reasoning test is divided into two sections with a total of 46 questions. The first section, which includes 5 questions, does not allow the use of a calculator. 

The second section, containing 41 questions, permits the use of an on-screen calculator.

You’ll be given a Formula Reference Sheet which includes formulas such as the Pythagorean Theorem and the formula for the area of a circle. Familiarize yourself with these formulas, but you don’t need to memorize them. 

Incorrect answers don’t count against you, so if you’re unsure about a question, skip it to manage your time better, but make sure to guess if you have any remaining time.

Grid Questions

In each Ged math test, there will be 40 multiple-choice questions and 10 grid questions. For grid questions, you might receive a list of bubbled numbers or a bubbled graph. 

For list questions, you will use the list to select the numeric answer, which you should then enter in the boxes above the list. If the answer is a repeating decimal like 1.33333…, convert it to a fraction, such as 1 1/3, or round it to 1.33. 

For graph questions, you’ll need to plot coordinates on a graph, so make sure you understand the layout: the x-axis runs horizontally and the y-axis runs vertically.

On the GED Math test, you are permitted to use the GED Scientific Calculator, specifically the Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView™ scientific calculator. This is the sole calculator allowed, available both as a physical hand-held device and as an online (on-screen) version. 

When taking the GED Math test at a testing center, you can use your own calculator. However, if you are taking the test online, you will need to use the on-screen digital version. Both versions function in the same way.

Here are some important points to remember:

  •  The handheld version has an On/Off button located at the lower-left side.
  •  For the online version of the calculator, click the calculator icon on the screen to open it in a new window. You can use your mouse to drag the calculator to the side of the screen so it doesn’t cover the problem. When you’re done with a calculation, click the “X” at the top of the window to close the calculator.
  •  After finishing a calculation, use the Enter button (this calculator doesn’t have an equal sign button).
  •  Use the white numeric keypad to enter numbers, the decimal point, and the negative sign (−) for negative numbers such as −13.
  • The operation keys on the right side allow you to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Use the minus sign for subtraction and the negative sign (−) on the keypad for negative numbers.
  •  The bright green 2nd button on the left activates the 2nd functions (in bright green) above the keys, such as square root, exponent, percent, and mixed number functions.
  •  The four arrows at the top right allow you to move the on screen cursor up, down, left, or right as needed. The delete key next to the arrows lets you correct mistakes.
  •  Before starting a new calculation, press the clear button above the operation keys to reset the calculator’s memory.

1. Translate Word Problems Carefully.

7. Treat Data Analysis Questions like an Open-Book Test. 

You wouldn’t skip a reading passage, so don’t overlook the data. Ensure you read every small piece of text on or around the data, including titles, axis labels, column names, and any footnotes.

 Pay attention to the units of measurement and observe any trends in the data before reading the questions.

8. Remember the Exponent Rules. 

When multiplying two terms with the same base, you add the exponents. When dividing two terms with the same base, subtract the exponent of the denominator from that of the numerator. If two exponents are enclosed in parentheses, multiply them. 

Simplify exponents by rewriting numbers as powers of their bases. For example, 27 can be expressed as 3^3.

9. Don’t see your Answer Among the Choices, Rewrite it!

At times, the GED might present the correct answer in the form of an expression or not in its simplest form. You could have the right answer even if it doesn’t exactly match any of the given choices. 

Try rephrasing your answer until it aligns with one of the options. For instance, 52 can be expressed as 25, and $50 can be represented as $15 + $35.
